The Scarborough and District Motor
Club was founded in 1903, the same year as Motorcycle sport’s governing body
in the UK, The Auto Cycle Union (A.C.U.).
As it was founded around one hundred
years ago, the Scarborough and District Motor Club has many pictures in it's
archive collection. This section will be used to display some of these historic
reminders of the history of motoring, motorsport and particularly, the history
of the Scarborough and District Motor Club history.

Just after the
turn of the century (1900s), a handful of young men had the habit of
retiring to Scarborough's famous Pavilion Hotel for a drink and chat
after racketing around the countryside on their Motorcycles. It is to
this group of enthusiasts that the Scarborough and District Motor Club
owes its existence.
At this time, hill
climbing was a new sport, attracting riders from throughout the
county. Everyone with a machine wanted to be the first to climb a
hill. Events were held at such great hills as Staxton Bank and Sutton
Bank (not yet proper road surfaces, by today's standards)
It was after one of the Sutton Bank meetings, where many
"outsiders" became aware of the club, that the Scarborough
club became known as the Scarborough and District Motor Club.
