Competing In Trials Part 3: Entering Events

Pre-Requisites

Before entering an event, ensure that your bike is mechanically sound (brakes work, no loose spokes, bearing sound and most importantly, a working engine stop switch) and you have all the proper riding gear.

In order to enter a trial you MUST hold a current trials competition license (ACU affiliation). You will be required to show your license card when signing on at the event (see below). To apply for a license, download an application form from the ACU, complete and get it signed by the club secretary (forms are also available from the club secretary) then return to the ACU for processing. This is important: ACU affiliation means that you are insured while taking part in all ACU-controlled events and protects both you and the club in the event of an accident.

Turn up at the venue in good time to allow plenty of time for signing on, checking your bike and getting into your riding gear. While most club events don't operate a time limit, if you arrive and start late you might find that sections have been closed by the time you get to them towards the end of the trial. Nobody wants to hang around (perhaps in foul weather) waiting for riders who didn't allow sufficient time to complete all their necessary pre-start tasks.

Signing On

When you arrive, the first task is to sign-on. This involves completing the event entry form, paying the entry fee and collecting your riding number (which must be displayed prominently on your bike to ensure that it's visible to the observers). At Low North Park, signing on is done at the site office next to upper paddock. Entries for youth riders must also be signed ny their parent or guardian.

The Start

The start of the event is usually indicated by a long blast on a car horn or an announcement from an official with a bullhorn. When you hear this, proceed to the start area on the road by the site office and wait to be told to proceed onto the course by the starting official. While waiting, you may be asked to sign a starting sheet.

The first section is usually close to the starting area (consult the course map displayed outside the office before starting) and you can just follow other bikes. If not, follow the course markers as described on the rules page.
